Last week in Atlanta, members of our Leader Community joined our team and ecosystem partner, Ampersand Leadership Group, for happy hour and conversation focused on thoughtful adaptation over dramatic reinvention. Between bites and lively discussion, clear patterns emerged about where software and SaaS business is heading.
Here's what we learned.
Market & Deal Environment: Patience Required
The deal landscape has turned into something of a standoff. Despite plenty of conversations happening, we're seeing fewer actual signatures on closing documents. Why? A classic valuation mismatch is playing out in real time.
Sellers are holding firm to yesterday's premium multiples, while buyers have recalibrated for today's economic realities. Private equity firms with available capital are showing impressive discipline, readily walking away rather than overpaying. The result? Processes dragging on or collapsing entirely after months of work.
One bright spot: vertical software solutions are capturing both attention and premium valuations. These sector-focused platforms are winning through specialized workflows and deep industry knowledge that horizontal solutions simply can't match. They're becoming embedded in their customers' critical processes, driving both stickier relationships and higher multiples.
Meanwhile, the payments space continues to buzz with activity. Abundant growth opportunities exist, but the competitive landscape has intensified dramatically. We're hearing that basic payment processing no longer cuts it – companies need specialized capabilities, unique technology advantages, or vertical-specific expertise to stand out in an increasingly crowded field.
Talent Market Trends
Top-tier candidates remain selectively open to new opportunities despite holding strong positions, making targeted placements more successful than pursuing active job seekers or post-exit executives.
Here’s what the discussions revealed about specific roles:
Product & Tech Leadership
Technology Leadership Turnover on the Rise:
Tech leadership changes are accelerating, driven largely by offshoring initiatives and cloud migration strategies. Companies aren't just replacing roles – they're seeking fundamentally different skill sets focused on global team management and cloud-native expertise.
Where Should Product Leaders Sit?
The product leadership discussion sparked some friendly debate around the table. Should product leaders sit at the executive table? Those advocating for C-suite representation pointed to market responsiveness and P&L accountability, while others worried about potential silos. What was clear: where leaders sit shapes how decisions get made.
Go-to-Market Leadership
CMOs & CROs Reporting to the CEO:
Chief Marketing Officers increasingly seek direct CEO reporting lines as non-negotiable. In contrast, Chief Revenue Officers are showing greater flexibility in reporting structures, provided they maintain accountability for the full revenue lifecycle including customer retention and expansion.
The Marketing & Sales Dynamic:
There was also discussion around marketing-sales reporting structure. Marketing reporting to sales often demonstrated stronger campaign alignment but potentially weaker brand cohesion, while independent marketing departments showed more innovative approaches but occasionally misaligned priorities. The consensus favored a structure that maintains regular cross-functional collaboration regardless of formal reporting lines.
People & Talent Leadership
HR Leaders Becoming Global Experts:
HR leaders shared their growing headaches around global compliance as offshoring expands beyond tech functions. The regulatory complexity and employee regulations varies dramatically by region, creating demand for specialized expertise in local employment laws, tax implications, and data protection requirements.
As our evening in Atlanta came to a close, what resonated most wasn't any single trend but rather the interconnected nature of today's business challenges.
The valuation standoff in dealmaking, the evolution of leadership structures, and the growing complexity of global operations all point toward a market that rewards thoughtful adaptation over dramatic reinvention. The organizations and leaders that thrive won't necessarily be those making dramatic moves, but those consistently making the right ones, staying up to date with the trends, and adjusting accordingly.
